    • Autism : handle with care!: understanding and managing behavior of children and adults with autism.

Publication date:
  • 1995
  • Future Education Inc.
  • Using the autobiographical collections of people with autism, Gail Gillingham develops her theories of a sensory focused method of care; i.e. in developing a programme of care for people with autism she believes that the recognition of a painful existence caused by stimuli in the environment should be of prime consideration. Supersensitivity to sound, smell, touch, sight, taste and emotion means that the environment carers share with people with autism may cause them extreme pain. Caregivers must therefore be aware of this reality and be prepared to deal with the environment, behaviours and attitudes of those who have autism.
